Study at your own pace at UTAR

New Straits Times, Mar 21, 2010

RECOGNISING the fact that each student has a unique individual needs, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) has introduced a flexible study system that allows students to study part-time or at their own pace.

Under the flexi-study system, UTAR offers five part-time bachelor's degree programmes with honours, namely the Bachelor of Computer Science, Bachelor of Arts in Chinese studies, Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Commerce in accounting and Bachelor of Science in construction management.

Challenging the conventional study method, UTAR gives almost anyone a chance to be a part of the "UTAR graduand" legacy as long as they are determined to succeed, regardless of their financial background and other commitments.

Given the fact that financial challenges are often one of the main factors in deterring students in obtaining their higher education qualification, UTAR also has a number of solutions to assist potential students in resolving their financial woes.

Their part-time bachelor's degree programmes cater mainly to working individuals so that they can study part-time while working full time.

Classes are held in the evenings on weekdays and on weekends to enable students to juggle their time between commitment and studies.

Students can also opt to enrol in UTAR's full-time bachelor's degree programmes while choosing to study only a minimum number of subjects per semester.

This choice of study is especially advisable not only for those who would like to take on part-time jobs to finance their studies but also for those who wish to study at a slower pace.

Those under the flexi-study system are subjected to the same stringent marking criteria as those studying full time.

Apart from the flexi-study system in its bachelor's degree programmes, students who have already been awarded their bachelor's degrees may opt to continue their studies in UTAR's postgraduate programmes conducted on weekday evenings and weekends.

UTAR, which also advocates lifelong learning, conducts a number of postgraduate studies, including master's and doctorate programmes.

Students who seek career advancements may also choose to attend the UTAR part-time classes aimed at helping students prepare for professional qualification examinations such as the Association of Chartered Certified Accountant, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators, the Malaysian Institute of Accountants Qualifying Examinationand the CISCO Certified Network Associate.

Established in 2002, UTAR operates from four campuses; UTAR Perak, UTAR Petaling Jaya, UTAR Kuala Lumpur and UTAR Sungai Long.

UTAR's next intake will commence in May. In conjunction with the May intake, UTAR is having open days at two campuses this month and an info day at one campus next month

The open days today are at UTAR PJ, and next Sunday at UTAR Sungai Long while the info day will be held at UTAR Perak on April 3 and 4.
